A.PRESSE: the label you only notice once you touch it

Scroll through any menswear feed and you’ll see logos, slogans, and big campaigns. Then there’s A.PRESSE, a Tokyo label that mostly lets its clothing speak for themselves.

It was launched in 2021 by Kazuma Shigematsu, who also looks after DAIWA PIER 39. His goal was modest but hard to achieve: make everyday clothes so well that you never feel the need to replace them.

The team works like the staff of a small magazine. Each season is an “issue,” and every garment goes through rounds of discussion and edits. Anything that doesn’t earn its place gets removed, and what remains is simple, balanced and easy to wear.

The reference points are old military uniforms, secondhand vintage finds and classic American workwear. A.PRESSE doesn’t copy them. It rebuilds them with stronger cloth, cleaner construction and a lived-in softness that normally takes years to get. Most of its fabrics, over 70%, are created by the brand itself and aren’t sold anywhere else.

You won’t find a signature colour or a giant logo here. The label’s own phrase is “designing without designing,” which basically means: make it right and let it be.

Even the store reflects the same thinking, with brass rails and custom wooden hangers that make an ordinary shirt feel a bit more special.

Sometimes the most memorable brands are the quietest ones.
